There is no direct description of Charlie. Reading between the lines, shows signs of Charlie being very observant.
Charlie talks about how his father smelled of “whiskey and after-shave lotion, shoe polish and woollens”. It is an impressive sense of smell.
He seems like an independant boy, who validates and makes choices himself. This is shown
The story is written in first person narrator, since the perspective doesn’t change at any point, it influences the way that we see his father’s behaviour unjustified, but if we saw the whole story from the father’s point of view, the behaviour would probably seem fine as he genuinely thinks he isn’t saying anything wrong, therefore it would probably seem more justified if we saw the story from the father’s perspective.
