Indledning
The short story “A Gift for My Mother” is about the ten-year-old girl Lucy, who lives with her parents in South Africa. Lucy will do everything to make her parents happy, and therefore she goes out to pick flowers.

She then puts the flowers in little bouquets and sells them to people around the neighborhood to earn some money for her parents, so they can afford a bigger and better house.

When she’s finally done selling all the flowers, she is over the moon thrilled to give the money to her mother. Lucy expected her mom to be thankful and happy for the money, but the exact opposite happened.

The mother demands that Lucy goes back from door to door with every single penny. She’s afraid that they will think she sent Lucy out to beg for money.

Even though Lucy doesn’t understand why she must do it, she does as she’s told. There’s one lady, that won’t accept the money and neither give the flowers back.

She tells Lucy that if her mother has a problem with that, she can come talk to her. When Lucy comes home and tells her mother about the women, she gets a little bitter but continues with the dinner.

Lucy’s relationship to her father is close. When she hears her dad’s car, she runs out to meet him (l. 15).

Her dad calls Lucy “My Precious”, which her mother isn’t excited about (l. 16-18: “My mother hates that. “For God’s sake, it’s a wonder the child hasn’t grown up thinking her name was My Precious.)

He also tells her how fantastic she is and that she’s the best speller he knows (l. 20). Lucy describes her father in a positive way (l. 24:

“He’s very good at explaining things and never makes you feel nervous or stupid.”) This also shows that she looks up to her father and that she’s a daddy’s girl.
