Indledning
The short story “The Sentry” is written by Téa Obreht in 2010 and published in The Guardian on Saturday the 14 of August. From the text you could begin to wonder what it is really is about but it seems to circle around themes like family relations and family hierarchies, expectations and disappointments, and who has the right to dominate who... In this essay the main focus point will be to uncover if this is really what it ́s about and produce evidence for stating that the specific topic in story is a really complicated farther-son relationship.

To begin with, a little knowledge about the story itself is needed. The story is about a boy who lives with his farther and housekeeper in what we assume is an eastern European country, could be Serbia since the writer is from there. They also have a dog which is very central to the main plot in the story.

It is important to include and argue for the focus point of the short story by going into depth with the boy Bojan. Bojan is what would seem as a pretty normal guy but he is not in fact, he is likely gay even though he did not know at the point in time and it is not stated directly. “he would wonder for years whether everybody knew how he would turn out”.

So, we don’t really get an answer for the theory about him being gay but he is certainly different from the other boys that he compares to. He loves music and is learning to play the piano.

The father on the other hand is a soldier and also his father before him. It ́s pretty clear that the family is a military family throughout the bloodline. The father has “a crocodile-skin wristwatch that had passed to him from Bojan ́s grandfather, the colonel”.
