Uddrag
His inner characterization conveys his dying girlfriend. The fact that he drinks, goes to parties and takes drugs, suggests that he lives a decadent lifestyle.
It is described in the short story that he has a girlfriend, a girlfriend with a disease. His attitude towards his girlfriend is characterized as being junky and superficial.
Instead of empathizing with her pain, he chooses to focus on details like her appearance. Further down on page two, we read that he is unfaithful to her with Mona, without showing any signs of guilt.
The narrator's attitude may not suggest that he does not care about his girlfriend, but that he will avoid being overwhelmed by pain and sorrow.
This may mean that he chooses to stay with her, even though he chooses to say that he doesn't love her.
