Since the Good Friday agreement in 1998 Ireland went from a certain war to uncertain peace. The island was divided and so was the society within.
We have on one side the Unionists and on the other the loyalists. We see those that want to stay in the U.K as protestants and those who identify as only Irish being nationalists and republicans. Northern Ireland became extremely divided.
Between a protestant and unionist party and an overwhelming minority of Catholics and nationalists. But time is changing because the ratio of Protestants to Catholics in Northern Ireland has fallen dramatically.
Even if Northern Ireland is seeing change, problems still occur. These problems are the educational systems for the youth in Northern Ireland and the issues raised when compromising youths’ values when it comes to education. Therefore, the issues raised around tolerance.
This essay will give an example of exactly this, through a rhetorical analysis of the article “Northern Ireland: an uncertain peace”, by Matthew Engel
which will focus firstly, on the language and appeal forms of the article, secondly, we will focus on the issue of tolerance and lastly, we will talk about the youth in Northern Ireland and the educational systems.
Analysis pentagram:
In this section, we will discuss the use of Matthew Engels instruments when it comes to assessing whether Matthew succeeded in his intentions towards the article.
We have therefore used the analysis model pentagram: intention, to analyse his use of words and his linguistic elements.
“But she also believes passionately in Catholic education. “Sharing is about respecting difference as well as celebrating what we have in common.
I hate the word ‘tolerance’. I don’t believe shared education should be about compromising your ethos and your values.”

In the quote above, we can see how Matthew Engels incorporates ethos into his article. Ethos deals with the credibility that the sender articulates as a message to the recipient.
