Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen and welcome to this event. My name is Kristian Laust and I am an 18-year-old student.

I am very happy to be here today due to the fact that I believe that todays subject of which I will be talking about is of great importance to our community. And in that sense, I would like to thank the mayor of London for putting this conference together.

Today I will be talking about the reasons behind the riots and why it has escalated so much, and also what actions everyone in the community can take to prevent more riots in the future because something must be done.

What I believe started the rioting was a young black man being shot dead by the police. What happened afterwards was peaceful protests but in a blink of an eye the protest turned into riots.

But there is a lot more to it than the shooting of this young man. If you dig deeper into the problems in our community you will find a lot more reason behind the rioting.

If you look at the people on the streets rioting, you’ll realize that the vast majority of them are young people around the age of twenty.

They are destroying their own neighborhoods, and a huge part these young people are unemployed since it is extremely difficult for them to get a job.

they are young people with little prospect for the future and they may not think about the consequences and being unemployed and short on money justifies their actions.

Furthermore, the social inequality has been increasing rapidly. The distance between poor and rich has been getting larger, and especially the increasing unemployment rate preserves that distance intact.

And especially the poor and unemployed young people are starting to feel left out and marginalized due to the lack of help from the government.

These young people feel some sort of hopelessness and a feeling of not getting to have a say and having influence which is rooted in their low position in the social hierarchy.

And by joining these riots they finally get a say and getting the feeling of being a part of something. When they go on the streets to do vandalism they accomplish something by acting on the lack of governmental help.
