Development tourism is a form of tourism, where you visit, live, and experience life in impoverished areas, often referred to as the slums.
This has gained popularity among young people, especially from the U.S. and Europe. But development tourism has gained criticism.
In this essay, we will discuss the potential benefits and concerns associated with development tourism, how the story “The Tourist” gives us a perspective on the slums, as well as two specific slums in New Delhi.
Development tourism has gained popularity for a few reasons. Here are some potential benefits. First, the cultural difference makes this visit a unique one.
India´s enrichment in culture is immensely famous. The Indian people have a deep-rooted history, and therefore they have a special kind of traditions and rituals.
Another significant benefit is the awareness and support. When young people from Western countries visit and explore the slums in India, they become aware of the living conditions of the people.
This way, they also gain compassion and empathy for the people, and maybe this way the awareness, compassion, and empathy can translate into support for social and economic changes in the slums.
Because the young people become more engaged with the issues affecting these big slum communities. Development tourism in New Delhi´s slums can have a positive impact on the slum communities.
The local residents have the opportunity to increase the money they earn. They earn the money by having small shops, for example, souvenir shops, and offering local guides.
