Let’s go to the Videotape

Indledning
“Let’s go to the Videotape” is a short story written by Fiona Maazel in 2016. The short story is about Nick and his son. Nick uploads videos on social media due to his wife’s death. Nick uploads videos on social networks to fill out the gap of his grief. You will never know when life breaks into thousands of pieces, so you must be happy with what you got.

Gus is a sensitive young man because he feels a lot of guilt that he survived the car accident, but his mother did not. Gus is traumatized by the car accident “Not long after the accident, Gus had developed a speech impediment” (p. 2 l. 46). For a five-year-old child, this event has been overwhelming and traumatized him because of his age and the loss of his mom. Furthermore, Nick thinks is hard to be a parent for Gus “Hard to parent” (p. 1 l. 5).

It might be hard for a single dad to grow up a child that is traumatized and that might affect their relationship with each other due to an absent child. Not only bad things have happened to their relationship with each other, but also good things have happened.

Nick loves his son and is willing to do everything for him. “Gus pedaling away on his own, newly aware of his autonomy, which contravened everything Nick had taught him by force of grief” (p. 1 l. 7 - 8). This shows that Nick is an overprotecting dad that wants to do everything for his son.

Nick loves his son more than everything because Gus is the only thing left. In the text, the reader finds out that Nick is a really good dad that only wants to best for his son. “Let me know if you need anything” (p. 2 l. 82 - 83). Nick wants to give Gus all he can, so Gus should not feel the guilt he has due to surviving the car accident. Nick has had a hard time after the loss of his wife and even though it is over three years ago Nick is still broken.
