“It was the immigrants who founded and shaped America.1“ according to Mette Holm who is the author of the book "Being American". Many people will say that the United States is built by immigrants, and that may be true. In any case, immigration played an important role in American history.

Every person has an opinion about immigration and is a controversial topic. For many, when they hear the word “immigrant" they think of a poor and unemployed person, but not all immigrants are like that. Immigrants can have many different reasons and motives for immigrating, which can vary widely from person to person.

Since the beginning of the 17th century has there been immigration to the United States where people have had different reasons and motives. The first settlements were established by the British people. They came to America to escape the British king and the economic problems in England.

When you talk about the waves of immigration to the United States, you are talking about the three big waves that have been. The first wave consisted of Western Europeans, who immigrated because there were opportunities and work in the United States, but also because there was a famine in Ireland.

The second wave consisted primarily of Eastern Europeans, they came to the United States to escape poverty, unemployment, and religious persecution.

The third wave of immigration is actually going on right now. It is primarily Mexicans but also people from India and China who immigrate to pursue their dreams and continually search for economic opportunities or religious freedom.

All the waves of immigration have something in common, they all have a reason or motive for immigrating. The reasons and motives have push and pull factors to immigrate.
