Indledning
Good morning. My name is Marcus Bohnsen, and I study American culture and history here at Boston University.

I appreciate being invited here to present and discuss the impact of immigration on American identity, culture, and economy.

First, I would like to get an overview of how many here generally thinks immigration has a positive effect, both socially and economically, by a show of hands?

In a report from 2018, CNBC presents fascinating statistics, which surprised me, when I first heard them.

An astonishing fact to me was that: “a 1 percent increase in a country’s migrant population adds on an extra 2 percent of GDP per capita in the long term” (01:25-01:31).

That is great of course, but it also left me wondering, why immigration boosts a country’s economy?

Later in the CNBC report, it is explained well with the quote: “Researchers say this is because migration is a risk, meaning the type of person who chooses to migrate tends to be more entrepreneurial.” (02:23-02:34)

This also explains why more than 40% of Fortune 500 companies and 50% of Unicorns are founded by immigrants.

However, there are also some negative short-term effects. For example, immigration has contributed to a fall in wages in the farming and construction industries, which is mainly because more than 50% of hired farmers are undocumented (04:09-04:17). Yet, it also contributes to a fall in food prices, which is great for society (04:48-05:02).
