Wishes are defined as the feeling of wanting something to happen or wanting to have something. It is an emotion all humans possess in their minds.
Some of us wish to have a bright, happy, and tranquil future, while others wish for things like material wealth.
Wishes are very individual, and people’s ways of making them come true are as well.
Some pray to a higher power, to grant their wishes, while others believe they can make them come true all on their own.

The climax of the story takes place when Sherry remembers Gene's last words to her: “cruel and exact.
He’d taken aim with them and shot me down. “I will not miss you” (l.124-125). Sherry’s description of Gene's words shows the reader that they have had a very powerful effect on Sherry.
This effect could maybe be caused by the fact that it made Sherry realize that she wouldn’t be able to get Gene back.
The story ends very abruptly when Sherry recalls having a broken toe from that fall, which was never taken care of, and every time a child stepped on her boot at work, the resulting pain reminded her of Gene.
