Indledning
The main character in Chad Pelley’s short story “I Don’t Dream of Genie” is a Jewish girl named Sherry, whose perspective we follow. Sherry is thirty-three years old and works as a Santa in a shopping mall.
Sherry describes herself as an attractive young woman, she says “in the right dress, I turn a few heads” (l.10). she also points out that her cup size is 32B, and that shows she has self-confidence.

The short story starts in media res where we hear from Sherry’s perspective about the loud and annoying children screaming and shouting their wishes into her ear.
The whole structure in the short story is presented backwards. First, we here about her job as Santa, then about her trip to Tennessee, and finally her breakup with Gene.
This shows a reverse chronological structure. This suggests that Sherry is desperate to go back in time where she still had Gene and where everything was better. Sherry is an impulsive person.
This is indicated by her rash decisions. Sherry decides to take the Santa job, because she saw a sign saying, “Mall Santa wanted” (l.21).
The single reason why she took the job was to pay for her trip to Tennessee for a three-day lucid dreaming seminar, where she hoped to recreate a pleasant dream she had about Gene.
Her dream is told as a flashback she had months ago. Another flashback she describes is her breakup with Gene. Here she remembers when he told her that there was another woman.
