Lost. Once again. How did I manage to wound up in a situation where I have no control over the outcome? I bet you know that feeling. I bet we all do.

The feeling of no longer being the master of our own faith. Everyone who has ever been heartbroken has differently felt that way at some point.

This is exactly the case in Chad Pelley’s short story “I Don’t Dream of Genie”, where the main character, Sherry, has just been broken up with. The short story especially focuses on the separation and how she deals with her new single status.

This is clear when her sister tells her to move on, but she just reflects about it and does not answer, “My sister’s a wretch, and I’m no more ready to move on than I am Santa Claus.

I’m allowed to be lonely and longing.” (P. 3, ll. 111-112). She does not want a romantic relationship in real life, only in her dreams, because she is afraid after getting hurt in her past relationship.

This particular mentality is probably the reason that she remains static, and all her attempts at feeling better fail.

Even though Sherry’s point of view is quite pessimistic, her humorous and self-ironic way of describing her troubles conveys her as a sympathetic character to the readers.
