Chapter 11
The main character Neville once again tries to complete his research, and luckily this time he finds a nice microscope, that meets criteria of his research. After teaching himself to use it properly he obtains a a blood sample from a vampire woman.
By later studying the blood, he validates, that the plague is caused by a bacterium called bacillus. Realizing he does not have any knowledge about this specific bacteria or potential cures, he determines to study and find out.
He comes up with a theory, that vampires are some kind of tool of the germ. That evening he decides not to get drunk and instead enjoy a tasteful meal.
Chapter 12
The next day did not go as expected. Neville’s experiment does not turn out as he wanted them to, and he can’t seem to figure out how to kill the germs. He tries different things, but without any effect.
Neville becomes frustrated and very angry at himself for being too stupid to figure out the right answer. As the dog is running around in the sunlight – the dog is not infected yet.
Neville tries to follow the dog, but is not able to catch up, as he has a really bad hangover from the previous nights. Neville then puts out some meat surrounded by garlic, in the small hope of the dog returning. He ends that saying a small prayer to God, that it will protect the dog.

Uddrag
Neville fears, that Ruth might be infected, even though she looks somewhat healthy and is able to walk in the sunlight. When trying to wake her up he notices a cross chain hanging around her neck.
As Neville wants to test Ruth, whether she is infected or not, he crushes a plate of garlic and pushes it up to her face. Ruth gets sick, but then explains that the reaction reliable as she was already sick.
