In the first chapter of the story, we meet three people, Connell, Marianna, Lorraine and Miss Neary.

The chapter starts off with Connell going to Marianna’s house to pick up his mom, Larraine. Lorraine is working as a cleaner at Marianna's house.

Marianna lives at this big white mansion. When Connell arrives to the house, he starts to chat with Marianna, while waiting for his mom to get ready.

Marianna and Connell are going to the same school, and Marianna is having a kind of bad reputation. It is rumoured, that she does weird things, like not shaving her legs etc.

She is known to be a bit weird. She doesn’t have any friends at school or anything, Connell is the only person talking with her.

Connell feel like he can tell Marianna everything, he isn’t frightened of her, but feels kind off awkward when talking with her. Once he saw her wearing only a bathrobe.

While chatting he starts to get hot ears when she was licking a teaspoon. They start talking about school, and their grades. They are both very good in school and seems to get high grades.

Marianna then stars talking about their teacher Miss Neary, she asks him if they are having an affair, because she has noticed how Miss Neary is acting very flirtatious towards him.

He does feel like she is acting kind of weird around him. A lot of people at school are talking about it.

At some point Marianna tells Connell that she likes him. There is silent for a few seconds, but right before he is able to answer her, his mom comes into the room.

She is now ready to leave. When leaving the house Connell gives a rather awkward goodbye, bye just saying “bye” while just looking at the floor.

When he sits in the car with his mom, she tells him that he should be nicer to her. He then starts the car and ask if they could talk about something else.

• No, we do not think that it is okay because they can’t judge her without knowing her.
