The text is about a boy/girl named Suki Kim from Korea. The family immigrated to the States when the dad’s company went bankrupt.

The consequence of bankruptcy is a prison sentence. So, the family went to seek new opportunities in USA. When they first arrived and Suki attended school for the first time, she had a cultural shock.

It was a very different experience to the schools in Korea. Line 26-28 “Once I saw a teacher struggle to pronounce foreign-sounding names form the attendance list while a boy in the front row French-kissed a girl wearing skintight turquoise jeans”. This explains why she had a cultural shock.
