My second universal theme is mental health and addiction. Kate brings up this theme because it is relevant to the younger generation, who are being diagnosed with mental health issues more frequently than previous generations.
In line 56, Kate says, “I can't ask for help though, nobody knows me,” which could mean that the younger generation feels misunderstood and cannot ask for help because no one understands them.
In line 59-61, she highlights how people work and work to be their best, but there is a darker side of drugs. She points out how drugs have become mundane and part of daily life, as seen in the line, “But even the drugs have got boring,” suggesting that people use drugs to feel normal.
Kate also discusses climate change and how people are not concerned but are trying to drink their problems away.
