“The Story of an Hour” Is a short story by Kate Chopin and first appeared in Vogue, December 6th 1894, with the title “The Dream of an Hour”. Since then it has become some of Chopin’s´ most popular work.
The story takes place in the nineteenth century and takes off with informing the reader that the main character's husband has passed away. The story takes place in the main characters, Mrs. Mallard and her husbands, house. The house is barely described; There is a staircase, Mallard has her own room, in the room, there is a chair which is comfortable. In relation to the title, the story’s plot seems to be taking place in about an hour’s time.
The story is told by a third-person narrator, who has access to the main characters thoughts, feelings and emotions. Louise’s´ husband, Brently Mallard, had supposedly passed away, and Josephine, Louise’s sister, and Richard, Bentley’s best friend, delivers the news. We later discover that this is not the case.
Louise Mallard is the main character. Within the first line of the short story, we are told that she has a heart disease; Knowing that Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble, great care was taken to break to her as gently as possible the news of her husband's death.
I believe that Louise’s heart trouble could be a symbol since hearts are often used to symbolize love.
