The first-person narrator of the story is a woman who lives in London. Her grandmother immigrated to the UK from the Caribbean (page 6, section 135).
She is a single mother with a young son. The description of her house is that she belongs to the middle-class, neither rich nor poor.
Personality:
The narrator describes herself as a typical Londoner, as an unsociable person: “I AM NOT IN the habit of making friends of strangers. I'm a Londoner.
Not even little grey-haired old ladies passing comment on the weather can shame a response from me.” (Page 1, section 5) The narrator also has moments where she must do stuff she hates, such as when she meets Laylor.
The narrator dislikes that she must interact with people, asking for loose change in the bathroom to buy tampons, but she has no other option. (Page 1, section 10)
