Nick is the main character in the story. He is a young innocent boy, who is accompanying his father to work in an Indian camp, where a woman is about to give birth. Nick’s father is a doctor, and he has an uncle called George, who is his father’s assistant.
Nick is a white boy, which we can see from the way that the Indians treat him and his father. We don’t get to know Nick’s exact age, but I think that there are obvious signs in the text, that show us that he’s still a child.
Maybe around 7-8 years old. The reason why is because in the beginning of the story, he is sitting on the boat with his father’s arms wrapped around him. Most boys older than 10 years wouldn’t really do that anymore. Also when they are walking back to the lake, his father calls him ‘’Nickie’’ to comfort him.
These little signs show and make us believe that he is still a child, even though it doesn’t say in the text how old he actually is. When his father is performing the caesarean on the woman, he is looking away which shows us that he is sensitive. And you can’t blame him for that.
He clearly feels disgusted, and he is not mentally prepared to see the horrors that he saw, with the suicide and cesarean. He basically gets introduced to life and death at the same day, which he handles quite well, considering the fact that he didn’t cry about it.
