Have you ever considered the possibility of being psychologically manipulated by another human being, to the point where you feel almost brainwashed? This issue is addressed in the short story “Sunshine” written by Anne Billson in 1993.

After meeting Charlie, the narrator is so enamored with him that she accepts everything he says and gives her. From that moment on she felt like she was reborn “I was a new person. I was saved”.
Not everything seemed to be as good as it appeared. Charlie used a lot of methods to persuade and manipulate the women.
When one of the other eleven women upset or disappointed Charlie, the narrator wanted to slap them, but she knew Charlie would not approve that “he was the only one allowed to dispense physical punishment” because she adored him and would go to great lengths to gain his attention.
