Indledning
It is very different what we each think freedom is, and how the perception of freedom can change over time. Freedom can be anything from no rules to having rights and a voice in society. The short story “Autumn Starlings” (2015) written by Andrea Smith portrays how the perception of freedom changes over the years.

The text Autumn Starlings is an example of a man whose relationship to freedom has changed over the years. The main character in the story is Eric who was married to Vera who is dead.

According to Eric he had always been free and has done what he wanted to do when he was young. Parties were a large part of his youth where drugs also were involved, and no one cared about the law back then.

The title in itself “Autumn Starlings” is most likely a symbol of the saying “free as a bird” since he misses the freedom of being youth and being able to do what he wants without any restrictions or rules.

Another symbol is Autumn which symbolizes that life is at the ending which is also the case for Eric. The main theme in the short story is freedom and regrets which also takes a large part of the story.

Life is full of opportunities when you are young and there are much fewer limits when you are young. However, when you get older you might look back at your life with some regrets on some decisions or lack of active decisions.
