The transition from being a child to becoming an adult is often an essential and remarkable event that plays a significant role in a person’s life.

This is due to the fact that during this transition, young individuals will gain more control over their current life, future, and opportunities.

However, during this process, there is often a tendency for people to primarily focus on the good elements of this transition rather than the difficult and negative things that may occur.

In the short story A Gap of Sky written by Anna Hope in 2008, there are many great examples regarding the difficult and negative elements that may occur during this process. Furthermore, we also see how the main character, Ellie, is greatly affected by these elements.

Uddrag
In the short story, we encounter the main character, Ellie. Ellie is a young 19-year-old girl who lives and studies in London.

Throughout most of the story, it can be seen repeatedly that Ellie seems relatively dissatisfied with studying at the university and taking the particular course in which she is forced to write an essay. “It was their fault she was doing this bloody course in the first place” (p,2 l. 66).

In this quote, it is very much implied that it was not her idea to go to university, but rather her parents' which could be one of the reasons why she is so negative about the course and the task.
