Indledning
We are the rulers of our own lives and the transition from being a child to becoming an adult can sometimes be a crucial and challenging event that plays an important role in a person’s life.

This is because during the transition from a child to an adult, young individuals will have more freedom and with freedom comes more responsibility.

Besides, the individuals will gain more control over their own lives. During this period, the events may seem quite overwhelming and tough to deal with.

This can also be seen in Anna Hope’s short story “A Gap of Sky.” Our protagonist Ellie seems to be overwhelmed with the freedom and control she has gained.

Ellie likes partying maybe just to shake off the pressure she is getting from her parents, and besides, throughout the story, she seems to be confused and disorientated.

There are some locations mentioned in the text which make Ellie think about her way of living and this quote nicely illustrates it: “Living and Dying” reads the plaque on the wall of the hall.

“How different cultures cope with the realities of Life and Death.” Ellie is not sure she’s ready to cope with death (…)” When Ellie was at the British Museum she started to think about the meaning of life and death.

This is because she felt a terrible headache, which caused her to fear death and that got her thinking. This fear of death pricks Ellie's heart, which makes her realize that she must change her way of living. She needs to be more responsible.
