Indledning
The transition from childhood to adulthood is a very confusing time. Growing up comes with a lot of new challenges and questions about yourself and your surroundings.
Some people dread the independence and responsibilities they will get, whilst others can’t wait to become their own person and making their own choices.
This goes for Julia, the protagonist of the short story “Walk Don’t Run” by Douglas Bruton, who couldn’t be more excited to grow up into adolescence.

The language of the story usually maintains an informal and almost naive style to reflect the worldview of the narrator. The style of writing in line 9-20 contains spoken language elements, such as incomplete sentences.
“Too soon, she once said, too soon a bride;” (l.15) This gives a better idea of the grandmother’s frame of mind. It also helps change the rhythm in the story.
In line 9-11 is a detailed description of a fish gutting, which shows her grandmother used to work in a harder environment with the fishers and has impacted her way of speaking and is a personality trait of hers.
This also shows when she uses words like “shit” (l.11). Since Julia looks over to her mother to make sure it is okay, she keeps listening, it tells us that they don’t normally use swear words in the family and therefore it makes the grandmother stand out.
