Julia’s grandmother’s physical condition also disgusts her, and she uses several negative similes to describe her:”

Her fingers turned into knots in her shallow lap, folded there like the curled legs of dead spiders or like the clutched feet of dead birds. And her skin dark, like old wood (...) one of her eyes cloudy like the eye of a grilled fish.” (S.1, ll. 16-19)

The grandmother's description of dead animals makes her sound disgusting and grotesque, which illustrates the narrator's initial frustration at having to look after her, as well as how she is frustrated that the grandmother is no longer the magnificent woman she remembers.
