Over the years Jing-mei is being giving several tests, but soon Jing-mei is getting bored, because she realizes she has no special talent, and that makes her mother very disappointed.
Besides that, Jing-mei is very impatient, and just wants to become a prodigy as fast as possible. she does not want to work for the so-called talent, and do not want to change anything about her present self.
Jing-mei decides she will not be obeying her mother and her wishes. Until one day she is forced to take piano lessons, but the failure continues.
---
The short story shows that it follows a conflict between Jing-mei and her mother, and other than that, there’s an internal conflict within Jing-mei, where she is spilt in half. Because she wants to please her mother, and on the other hand she does not want to change who she is as a person.
The mother grew up in China and moved to San Francisco in America. The short story is set in Chinatown. It hints in this case, separation of people based on ethnicity in US Society, as minorities live together in one area and did not interact with others.
Jing-mei’s mother talked about that America appears as the land of possibilities and according to her mother “you could be anything you want to be in America”. for the mother it’s a place for hope and new dreams and contrasted with China, which she perceives as a place of loss and sadness.
