When Hattie is not hiding behind her curtains, she watches the cat family living in the back garden.
Sometimes when she watches the cats, she also thinks of her own life and her former husband, who reminds her of the white cat. The white cat is gentle but sometimes fights with the house cat Rufus.
Analytical Essay
We all go through life differently, and for many, family is an essential part of life. Unfortunately, growing old is also a part of life that many may not look forward to.
The short story, ‘The White Cat’ written by Jim Brannin approach the part of life someone would call the less fun part, namely the end of life. We meet Hattie, an old lady who has no regrets about growing old but is sorry for what she is restricted from doing.
The story and setting take place with Hattie in her bedroom. Hattie is restricted from moving around since she is physically disabled. Therefore, the area is limited.
She is sharing the house with her niece, who has two girls. Hattie doesn’t interact with the girls very often, only when they involuntary bring her food.
When Hattie is looking out her window, she limits her field of vision by covering most of it with the curtain, so she only sees a glimpse of the world outside. Hattie is, in this way, a prisoner in her own home and life.
