We only see as much as we would if we observed from a window. A lot of things goes unanswered: Why are they at a hotel?
Why is the cat in the rain such a big deal? What do the couple think and feel about each other? These are things we must read between the lines. An interesting part in the story is when the woman comes back to the hotel room and says:
“I wanted it so much,” she said. “I don’t know why I wanted it so much. I wanted that poor kitty. It isn’t any fun to be a poor kitty out in the rain.”
George was reading again. This is a part where the reader must think about what this means. Why does the woman have such a strong connection to this cat?
