What does age mean to you and how would you define an old individual? Is age only defined by numbers that determents your place in the system or is age subjective?

The way we tend to see and view our age doesn’t necessarily interpret with how we perceive nor judge the age of others.

We tend to assume that elderly people can’t change their old traditional patterns or beliefs, all because their chronological age is higher than our own.

In terms of the physical setting, the story takes place in Hattie’s small room on the upper floor of a shared house with a view of the back garden from her window.

The setting emphasizes the sense of a confined environment because Hattie pulls back only the corner of her curtains to get a glimpse of the outside world, where she cannot set foot in.

“In this sense, the setting also illustrates how she deliberately narrows her perspective both literally and metaphorically.

“As always she would turn the curtain back and watch the cats all day from her window, stopping only to fulfill nature’s necessities”.

The back garden slowly becomes an important part of not only the psychical setting, but also the setting as a way of revealing the protagonist’s most inner thoughts, that aren’t revealed through the text.

The author is using the outside world to give the readers an insight into Hattie’s inner thoughts and reflections. “That’s how Johnny was, too.”
