In the 21st century many authors have written about slavery in spite of the fact that it can be a controversial topic. The Whipping Boy is a short story written by Richard Gibney in 2011.
The story takes place at the end of the American Civil War, around 1865. In the last 10 years we have seen slavery being portrayed in famous movies such as “Django Unchained” or “12 Years A Slave”.
We also see different kind of objects that were modern during the 19th century, such as pitchforks , snuffboxes and handkerchiefs .
In the end of the story Martha, Mikey and Tommy also encounter confederate soldiers that were in the army of the Southern States during the Civil War.
The way the author has portrayed the behaviour and social diversity is also interesting to look at. When being told that they are free, Mikey grabs Martha’s breasts and kisses her: “then Mikey cradled Martha’s breasts in his hands and kissed her lips ”.
Quickly Martha gets embarrassed at Mikey’s behaviour, due to a white boy standing in front of them. This creates the impression that black slaves back then did not have many rights, as they weren’t even allowed to express love.
