Indledning
Loneliness is a familiar feeling that many individuals experience at some point in their lives. Despite being aware of our uniqueness, we may find ourselves feeling too distinct, leading to a sense of awkwardness or peculiarity.

This often results in feelings of loneliness as society tends to stigmatize those who do not conform to its norms. The reasons behind why some individuals may appear weird to others remain unclear.

Nevertheless, being part of a group is essential for most people as it provides a sense of belonging and security. The short story "About a Boy" delves into the life of Marcus, a peculiar and isolated boy, shedding light on his experiences.

In his current situation, Marcus realizes that he must navigate the challenges of school independently, without his mother's support. This reality highlights the uniqueness of his situation, which may be linked to his differences from others.

With this in mind, the theme of "family" is worth exploring in greater depth, especially in light of Hillary Clinton's essay "No Family is an Island." Clinton underscores the significance of a complete family, citing both her parents' impact on her life.

Her father instilled in her a strong work ethic, while her mother provided her with unlimited love and support. These traditional roles were necessary for her personal growth.

Unfortunately, Marcus lacks a father figure, which means he has not experienced the "hardships" that come with that role. This may also be implied in the title "About a Boy" since Marcus is uncertain how to behave as a boy or child in general, lacking a male role model, and has had to grow up too quickly due to the absence of a male figure in his life.

It's not just the absence of a father figure that affects Marcus; his entire social support system seems to be missing. There is no mention of grandparents, aunts, uncles, or cousins in his life.

A century-old photograph titled "Three Generations" depicts a family comprising two children, a mother and father, and a grandparent. Comparing this photograph to the present story, we observe how family dynamics have evolved over the years.

The changes in family structures are also discussed in Anthony Giddens' essay "Family." The traditional family structure that provided socialization and support has shifted to single-parent families or institutional child-care arrangements.
