The film imply that people are poor because they are selfish, lazy or weak and Cruz has a very different opinion on that topic.

The poor people he knows are very hard working, selfless and strongest. This indicates that maybe the film is not that good to show how to climb the society, and it is more of a “movie miracle”.
But there are countless of examples of people once being poor, and then working hard to get to the top and eventually gets there.
