The main science fiction element of ‘The Rental Heart’ is the possibility of renting out hearts. The heart is no longer the necessary organ that keeps us alive, but a mechanical thing made by metal comparable to today's spare parts for cars.
Whenever you feel heartbroken you can simply go and get a new one and start fresh. The story is set in a future very similar to ours
but I would still call it a dystopia because of all the advanced technology displayed throughout the story with focus on the rental hearts.
