Alice Gray, a 70 years-old Jamaican immigrant is an individual who has faced inconveniences throughout her life. Physically tired, because of her old age and the discomfort of the immigration struggles, Alice attends an immigration meeting despite feeling fearful and frustrated; “but she had been kept waiting for sixty slow minutes and frustration had supplanted the fear that had sat heavy in her belly ever since the rahted summons had arrived” (p.1, ll. 5-7).

During the meeting, Alice gets flashbacks on her past experiences, which reveals her struggles. Memories of her childhood in Jamaica and the troubles of adjusting to a new country; “It was hard, no lie – dere were times when I wanted to guh back, and dere was times I wished wi had never stepped foot on dis rhated island” (p.6, ll. 21-22).
