The bible may be the ideal goal of living for our society but if it is interpreted in a certain way it turns another direction.

This shows when we hear that she never really supported her mother’s activism, “They ignored me and I resented them. (…)Part of my disapproval was that, I’m sure: perfunctory, routine” (chapter 28, page 186, line 6-7 and line 15).
She just wanted a normal mom and someone to think about her. Her relationship with Luke, before the Gilead government, also shows us that Offred isn’t a feminist, because the relationship started with them having an affair in cheap hotel rooms.
She does have friends that are more feminist, like Ofglen who is a member of the resistance, but when asked to join the resistance group Offred is never brave enough to join.
Sometimes she thinks about escaping but when she starts the relationship with Nick, she seems to lose sight of it.
The life in Gilead begins to feel relatively tolerable. In the end when she may or may not escape it is only because of Nick, it has nothing to do with anything she does herself.
She is essentially a passive character, confident but still affectionate.
