Indledning
The bible may be the ideal goal of living for our society but if it is interpreted in a certain way it turns another direction. “And when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and said unto Jacob, Give me children or else I die.
And Jacob’s anger was kindled against Rachel; and he said, Am I in God’s stead, who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb?
And she said, Behold my maid Bilhah, go in unto her; and she shall bear upon my knees, that I may also have children by her.” (Genesis, 30:1-3).

Offred is the protagonist and the narrator in the story. Offred's name is actually June, but in the society the women loses their names and get a new one, that consist of the start which is “of” and their commanders name, here “fred”.
She is intuitive, affectionate and intelligent. She isn’t perfect and still makes faults, but not too many that she turns into an unsympathetic character.
Offred possesses a dark sense of humor as well, this makes her descriptions of the horrors of Gilead tolerable and in some way delightful.
She isn’t the hero of the novel, because even though she resist Gilead deep down, she gives up after her failed attempts at escape and surrender to the society rules. Offred is not portrait as a feminist.
This shows when we hear that she never really supported her mother’s activism, “They ignored me and I resented them. (…)Part of my disapproval was that, I’m sure: perfunctory, routine” (chapter 28, page 186, line 6-7 and line 15).
She just wanted a normal mom and someone to think about her. Her relationship with Luke, before the Gilead government, also shows us that Offred isn’t a feminist, because the relationship started with them having an affair in cheap hotel rooms.
