The Fox Cub | Analytical Essay | Jackie Brewster

Indledning
The short story "The Fox Cub" tells the story of Marie through Rachel's eyes. Marie is a thirteen-year-old girl who's recently relocated to a new village;

besides Marie being the latest novelty of the town, there is something about her that doesn't quite fit into the nice village life.

Marie both comes across as to grown for her age but also simple and vulgar. This makes Rachel a bit uneasy, although she can't help but also be interested in finding out more about Marie's life.

Uddrag
Rachels ill-feeling about the field is particularly noticeable in the passage where Marie's cousin first appears. He makes a couple of snarky and smutty comments;

"I'm with Marie," she said. Her voice sounded less confident than she would have liked. He smirked. "What are you doing with that stupid cow?" .

Rachels reaction to the cousin's remarks compared to Marie is a great example of how she and Rachel are so different; "Who's your little friend, Marie?"

the boy called and spat at the ground." "None of your business." . As you can see, Marie is used to the dirty and condescending talk, and it doesn't bother her anymore.

The story has a third-person narrative, bound to Rachel's point of view, as we only have access to her thoughts and feelings.
