Indledning
We live in the 20th Century and still don’t have gender equality in all aspects of our society.

In John Steinbeck’s short story ”The Chrysanthemums” from 1937, he writes about Elisa the strong and clever women with ambitions, but with nowhere to use it in a society characterized by male chauvinists.

The story is set in Salinas Valley, described as “closed off…from all of the rest of the world” (p.1, ll. 4-5).

Uddrag
Elisa lives a life where she doesn’t get recognition for what she does or for her plans for instance when talking to the Tinker “It ain't the right kind of a life for a woman.

Her upper lip raised a little, showing her teeth. "How do you know? How can you tell?" she said.” (Pp. 6-7 ll. 46-47-2-3)

Yet again she is told that her gender is the problem, but her reaction tells a lot about her and that she’s ready to fight the stereotypes

furthermore John Steinbeck makes her reaction to the Tinker’s response sound like she’s a raw animal with Elisa showing teeth like a dog.
