“Still, I rise” published in 1978, is an inspiring poem written by, Maya Angelou, an African American woman. Maya Angelou was known for being an American poet, memoirist and lastly civil rights activist.

As racism has been an ongoing discussion for years, Maya Angelous used the poem “Still I rise” to be an example for her audience facing through the same obstacles.
In stanza eight she states, “Out of the huts of history’s shame I rise up from a past that’s rooted in pain I rise” (stanza 8. Line 1-4).
