The short story is told from Evie's perspective but is told in the 3rd person narrator. The way you can see that it’s a short story is because there is only one action with few people and a short storyline.

Secondly, we would like to analyze the setting and use of contrast. In contrast to Evie's personality and faith, prison is rough for her. As previously mentioned Evie's relationship with God means a lot to her.

That becomes clear to the reader as her prayer is described “As she prays she feels comforted as though a fleece, gentle and soft, were enveloping her. She wonders if this is similar to the feeling junkies enjoy on heroin.

She has heard some of the men describe it as like being wrapped in cotton wool, ‘all warm and lovely’ ”. She compares the rough world of prisoners to praying.

She tries to understand the criminal's world but she finds it hard ”It is hard to equate that description…”. Evie is trying to equate the rough world inside the walls with the soft and gentle world outside the walls.

The type of knife Victor used to stab his friend with was a butterfly knife which is a common symbol which is the contrast Evie has a hard time understanding

” She wanders back to the chapel trying to imagine a butterfly knife and the damage it could wreak and wondering at the strangeness of how a thing so hard and sharp, designed to cut, slice and stab, could be named after something so delicate and easy to kill.”
