Huckleberry Finn, nor any other literature, is free from the passage of time, and reading of any literature from another time demands a lot of the reader; critical reflection in this case of societal and racial issues that were prevalent at the time of writing.

This novel and many others from this time force the reader to confront the harsh and brutal realities that lie within our history. The novel is a reflection of a period and portrayal of a young man who has been indoctrinated by his contemporary society and culture.

The novel should therefore be read with this historical social context in mind and as a lesson in literary history. I believe in the importance of maintaining knowledge and recognition of the past, even if this might confront us with a feeling of discomfort and for some people horror, disgust, and a wish to censor the past.

I suspect that censorship of our history could lead to a rewriting of our historical insights, understanding and also create a society of people who are incapable of being critical of historical literature and all of its liabilities, faults, and merits.

Thomas J. Hubschman claims that the book should be prohibited today, and it is in fact banned in many American schools. Hubschman suggests that the book should be banned not because of fact or value but simply as a policy.

The grounds for his claim are that if you disagree with his opinion of banning the novel it will make you both unpatriotic and immoral and that the novel is a depraved and dated depiction of American values.

Hubschman is therefore appealing rhetorically to the reader´s sense of pathos by evoking and depicting certain feelings. “First, the book is unpatriotic, is in fact anti-American” (line 12- 13 page 1)
