Indledning
Growing up can sometimes be difficult, especially when you live a life, like the narrator do in the short story “Better Homes and Gardens” by Catherine Moffat.

The short story presents the story about a little family on three, that don’t have a home, so they live in their car.

But even though the family’s dad tries his best to give his children a normal childhood, the oldest feel a responsibility to also take care of the family, especially his little sister.

In addition, the narrator, who we assume is a boy, even though it is not directly in the text, also must wear a facade up at school, so that his classmates don’t realize that he is living a different life.

The only thing you can assume from the text is that it is a boy, since he talks about, how difficult it is to keep pretending that he knows, what trends on YouTube, and what the latest games is.

Which typical is something boys talk about. Another example could be, when the narrator does his homework in the change room

then he sits in the men’s room, and the only thing he mention is that Grace is getting too old, to still be in the men’s locker room.

Even though we don’t know the gender and not least the age of the narrator, you can still sense, that the person is very mature at his age.

He watches out for his sister, he does his homework and he do some chores for his father, although he thinks it’s annoying, such as get the bucket out of the boot.

He is also mature enough to understand that the life they live isn’t normal, and getting noticed is something they avoid , because of their different way of living.

The narrator is also showing a lot of maturity, when their dad is missing, because he stays calm and distracts Grace by giving her the things

she needs to make fairy wings , just like when their father needs to wash clothes, he distracts the kids by letting them watch television.
