Indledning
After the Vietnam War, many soldiers returned home, wounded and in shock from the horrific things they had seen. This story of soldiers is often untold, as it is a complicated and hard topic for many Americans to speak about, both soldiers and relatives.

Julia Thacker’s short story ‘A Civil Campaign’ from 1990 deals with this topic by telling the story of a soldier, Gus, returning home to his partner Leah and how their relationship has to grow from now on. The story focuses on their relationship, especially the sexual aspects, and it shines a light on the way that the Vietnam war has affected it.

Hence, this essay will be discussing these three aspects of this short story: The main characters’ relationship, the sexual aspects, and the Vietnam war’s impact on their relationship.

Uddrag
After fighting in the Vietnam war, the main character Gus returns from the war and seems to have lost the will to live. As seen when Leah asks if he is hungry and he replies: “
“Not hungry,” he mumbled. Nor did he seem interested in the décor...”. Gus does not seem to be a very adventurous or energetic person either, both before and after the war.

As said in the story, Gus has returned wounded or possibly paralyzed and cannot move around very much, getting a helping hand from his partner, Leah, with most things. He seems to be very distressed and affected by this, and he feels a certain disconnect from his environment.
