Many people around the world have problems in their daily life that affect their mental state, people can get depressions or other mental problems that make them sad or put them into a lonely place.
This can also make people want strangers to leave them alone so they can cope with the issues themself even though that might not be the healthiest way to do it.

When it comes to the main theme of the story I would say that this is prejudice, this is seen when she first gets on the train she finds a place in the bag off the train where she wants to sit alone and process her feelings by being alone.
After she sits down she watches and describes people as they enter the train, ”A Maori man gets on board carrying a battered brown bag and an ancient guitar.
He’s dressed in old, sloppy clothes. His hair has an overgrown, wild look, like unmown grass, and although he has a big smile on his face, he still looks like the kind of person to disturb the peace. ”
This is where the theme Prejudice shows, even though the girl is Maori herself she still describes the man as a filthy person who looks like a homeless person just based on how he looks, this is a strong case of being prejudiced, even though they come from the same culture.
Later in the story she starts talking with the Maori man, ”Can I borrow a light? ” She walks up and asks the man for a light for her cigarette after this they start talking and she realizes that she recognizes him .
After their brief short talk and her finding out his name, she starts feeling comfortable, ”My shoulders relax. I feel relief like I can trust him now, but I’m not sure why.
I smile. It is the first real smile I’ve had on my face for days. We sit outside the roadside diner in the small town of Kaiwaka, smoking our cigarettes and looking at the green hills. ”
At this point, she starts being more chill and relaxed around him, which causes her to slowly let go of her grief for awhile.
