The short story “May the Best Man Win” by Kit de Waal takes place in a pub called “The Carpenter’s Arms” in Birmingham, England, at a Saturday night in December 1981 (l. 4).

The pub is described as a local pub, with regular and well-known customers. The pub was characterized by black men, from another ethnic group.

Other people didn’t seem welcoming, and especially not people who stood out from the regular customer clientele. It reflects in the start where the atmosphere is uncomfortable tense, and hostile.

When the regular customers start to accept Eddie and his three friends, the atmosphere becomes positive and friendly. “The noise in the ring and the noise in the pub was deafening.

It was like a party. People were taking sides and there were good-natured arguments, pushing and shoving and a lot of swearing, more than usual (p. 4, l. 10)”

The main characters in the short story “May the Best Man Win”, are Eddie and Patti. Eddie‟s attitude impresses Patti, and through the night, her interest grew in him.

The other characters in the story are the other men in the pub, but they are briefly mentioned. At first, the regular customers at the pub reacted disrespectfully, and discourteously against Eddie and his three other friends. Probably because they were white, and didn‟t fit into the usual customer clientele.

However, Eddie‟s friendly, open-minded, and down-on-earth attitude, made them accept him, as they accepted each other.

Because of this, they could successfully stay, and watch the boxing match with the other men at the pub.
