1. Last time you made problem statements on the exploration of the East – today we are adding to that perspective.
- What characterises the Portuguese explorations in the Eastern world, and the Spanish explorations in the western world?
- What consequences did the mindset of the Portuguese and Spanish people have on the native people’s way of life?
- How was the experience of arriving in India in comparison to arriving in America from a Portuguese and Spanish perspective?
2. Discuss how ”Kartoflen” can be used in History? (help can be your homework and ”Method & theory”) – give 3 examples from the cartoon.
3. Analyse ”Line on Demarcation” (can be found on Moodle) and how this division of the world shaped the world at the time and if we can argue we see similar lines of demarcation in 2021? (it’s not as easy an answer as one would think – time place and circumstances play a role!)’
4. Finally discuss how ”Leif Erikson” (can be found on Moodle) contributes to our understanding of ”European exploration” and of the concept “the discovery of the New World” (here the PowerPoint might come in handy) – look for “1501”?

Begin by presenting your problem statements from last week to each other. Find the best elements from each of your problem statements. We are expanding your problem statements today.
You are now to make (new) problem statements on the European exploration to the East and West – so you discuss and combine last week’s problem statements with today’s new knowledge about the explorations to the West.

The line of demarcation is a line dividing the new lands claimed by Portugal from those of Spain. The line was in 1493 after Christopher Columbus returned from his maiden voyage to the Americas.
The line of demarcation was set by the treaty of Tordesillas. Everything on the left side belonged to Spain while the right side was owned by Portugal.
It had an influence on today as that was the reason as to why Brazil was colonized by the Portuguese while the continent was still considered as spanish.
In 2021 the part Spain has in the picture of 1494 has become America and the part Portugal has is today Africa.
