There is a lot of different opinions on if you either prefer a book or a movie. You can argue that it is easier to watch a movie and still get the message but for some people, a book is much better because it is more detailed and most of the time you hear the character’s thoughts which makes the story more exciting.

One big difference between the movie and the book is the characters. You can see that the movie tries to show what is happening on the “outside”, where the book shows what is happening on the inside.
Like stated in the movie you get to see the struggles like their houses or the areas they live in and you can see why they are doing bad in school because it is easier to understand the struggles when you see it instead of when you read it.
In the book, you have a deeper characterization because the author shares the character’s thoughts and, in the movie, they do not share the character’s thoughts.
For example, in the movie when Emilio has to make a choice on if he would rather stay in school and be safe or go back to the streets and kill or get killed. We do not hear his thoughts or what he is thinking, he ended up getting killed .
