” Weir ate the meal alone in the dining room” . “No, it’s not that. Its…. I don’t know. (…) I wonder if I could have a drink” . This indicates that the parents do not weight a conversation with their son highly.
Weir does not even respond that the father does not look up when he arrives. Weir tries at one point to tell how terrible the war is, but the father coldly replies that he has read the letters. Weir gives up his father’s attention , and instead opens a bottle of sherry to forget the thoughts .
Weir’s father is a proud man who does not want to talk about feelings or absence. He thrives best by being alone. He misses his son but would rather give a bad conscience than a loving hand.
His loneliness, because of his son’s journey to the army and his wife’s sociable zeal, has driven him crazy. “That’s it. That’s my beauty. He´s a champion” .
“We all want it to end, but we just have to get on with things in the meantime”
Here the father speaks so well of an insect, which is directly a suppository to Weir, since he does not even receive support for his deed for his country.
He finds an insect funny, which shows his problem. He will not hear the details of the war, but instead says that everyone is in the same boat. He is afraid of the horrible truth.
The mother longs for the father’s attention and seeks other communities instead. She loves her son, which he knows. However, she is aware that he is earnestly seeking acceptance from his father.
The mother tries to reunite the two boys and puts herself in last priority instead. The mother is a strong and caring woman.
