Indledning
Try to imagine having to balance between the roles of mother, career woman, and wife. Many do that, but one thing is sure, and that is that it is not easy.
Especially not when there is such a big difference in what the roles of mother and career woman entail.
This specific scenario is presented in the short story “Bangana” by CJ Hauser from 2014, where Alicia Brennan must navigate between her work in the military as a drone pilot, which in itself is a controversial topic and her private life as a wife and mother.
To different roles with different expectations, and the balance between them Alicia struggles to find.

Physically the narrator is in Virginia, USA, where her home and office are, but mentally she is in Afghanistan, where she is ‘present’ in the form of a drone when she is at her office.
This separation between her work and her real-life is expressed in the following excerpt “So I’m hovering over the warehouse, and by I, I mean that I’m here in Virginia” (p.1, ll.76-77).
The setting contributes to drawing a harsh line between her two lives. This could lead to an assumption that it is easy for the narrator to separate work and private life, but this is not the case.
The contrast between the different environments she is in has the opposite effect, where she finds it difficult to navigate between her different roles.
The setting also contributes to raising criticism against drone pilots’ power in the military as it can harm innocent people, and this view is presented in Alicia’s social environment, by her husband.
